Michael was deployed to Afghanistan, an IED blast left him was forced to make the decision to amputate his left arm below the elbow. In 2015, he saw an opportunity to once again represent his country, and moved to Colorado for the winter to train and compete in both snowboarding. In 2018, Michael was able to achieve his goal of becoming a Paralympian and in March of 2018, he went to Pyeongchang, South Korea, to compete in the Paralympic Winter Games. Michael is now part of the US snowboard team competing at the Beijing Winter Paralympics this month.
