On September 11, 2001, our nation endured a tragedy that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 innocent civilians. Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, coworkers, friends — people simply living their lives. We remember them today with full hearts, honoring their memory and the families who carry their absence every day.![]()

But the story of 9/11 does not end at that morning. In the years that followed, thousands of service members stepped forward to defend our country, to confront those responsible for the attacks, and to protect Americans from future harm. Many of them gave their lives in that mission — Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who answered the call with courage and conviction.![]()

Today, we honor them all.![]()

We remember the civilians whose lives were taken without warning. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger. We remember the service members who deployed again and again, carrying the weight of duty. And we remember those in uniform who never returned home — the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the years since 9/11, standing watch so others could live in peace.![]()

Their legacy is one of courage, unity, and unwavering resolve. Their sacrifice is woven into the fabric of our nation. And their memory lives on in every act of service, every moment of unity, and every promise to never forget.![]()

On this day, we pause. We reflect. And we honor every life touched, taken, or forever changed by 9/11 and the long years that followed.![]()

And we will never forget.
Today, we pause to honor the memory of Corporal Johnathan L. Benson, a proud Darkhorse Marine who gave his life in service to our nation. Twenty years ago, on September 9, 2006, he was killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His courage, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to his Marines and his mission will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, warrior.![]()
