Walk onto St Nicholas Catholic Church on any Monday morning  and ask to be pointed toward the meeting place for the Sewing Club ladies.

You will be directed to a small hall where a group of  devoted women, many in their 80’s and some in their 90’s, sit at their sewing stations.    In spite of aging hands and eyesight, the women ply their skills and  handiwork to make baby clothing and quilts for families they don’t know and children  they’ve not met.   Cate Wolski, the leader of the sewing club, contacted Team Darkhorse after reading about our group, to offer some of their  handmade items to us for the families of the Marines.

Luz Andrade, who knits caps and sweaters, immigrated here 50 years ago from Columbia.  She said she is inspired to help others because she remembers how hard it can be at times for young families to afford clothes.  Lettie Slusiewicz, seated holding a quilt, explained she joined the sewing club because “everyone needs a purpose.”

The items they provided will be used to create more welcome baskets for the newest members of the Darkhorse Marines’ families.
