On Thursday, February 1, Team Darkhorse members were honored to attend the Change of Command Ceremony , during which the current Commanding Officer LtColonel Jackson Doan “passed the colors” to incoming Commanding Officer Lt Colonel Geoff Hollopeter.
The ceremony, held on the Parade Deck at North Camp Pendleton, was fascinating to witness and was replete with tradition. Assembled in front of us was the entire Battalion being called to attention on deck. In procession the “orders” were read, the incoming and outgoing Commanding Officers called to the front, Presentation of Award, Commanders comments, and posting of the Colors. With the 1st Division Band on hand to provide percussion, the troops then “passed in review” in front of the assembled Officers and audience. 1stDivision Commanding Officer, General Eric M. Smith, reminded those assembled that every Marine is connected to those who came before, as each generation hands over the tradition, commission and mission to the next.
At the conclusion, the Band played Waltzing Matilda (Marines), Anchors Away (Navy) and the Marine Corps Hymn.
We of Team Darkhorse have learned that “Hello” and “Goodbye” are never far apart, but those we come to know are also never far from our hearts. We wish “Fair winds and following seas” to Lt Col Doan and his wife Venus. And thank them for their service!
